World Environment Day – The Greatest Threat to Our #OnlyOneEarth…….

Climate Action North Climate Action North

As we gather together to support World Environment Day 2022 we recognise this year’s theme and campaign as #OnlyOneEarth which calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.

Our speaker for this year’s World Environment Day event is Don Kent who has been involved in environmental issues for 50 years, starting with the anti-motorway campaigns in Newcastle Upon Tyne and spanning Nuclear Waste Dumping, Toxic Waste, lead in petrol, packaging, save the whale, habitat loss, air pollution and very recently opencast coal, where he took the operator of an opencast coal mine to court for a wildlife crime.

Don has visited Antarctica three times with the 2041 Foundation delivering lectures on the ship and working with the founder of 2041 Robert Swan, famous for the well used quote .”the greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it”.

Don has mirrored his voluntary campaigning with a professional one. Back in 1976 he was on the first Environmental Science degree offered by Northumbria University and in 2000 he took a Masters in Transport planning to follow his passion for environmental transport work.

Currently working with Living Streets in Gateshead on active travel to school, he is the UK coordinator for European Mobility week/World Car free, day alongside his role as a board member for environmental NGO ACTTravelwise/Modeshift

Don’s story is a fascinating one which we would like to share with you as we gather at Rainton Meadows, the home of Durham Wildlife Trust on Friday 10th June.

This event starts at 9am with refreshments and also includes an optional outside netwalk (weather dependent).
